Systemic Portrait // SMAL

Systemic approach to a possible reality. (portraits)

The methodical breaking down of the real into individual parts – reduction of color – a composition in black and white. The resolution is arrangement and unit of measure. In addition, I see the portrait not only as a reflection of a person but as a socially critical image. A selfie-gernation.

The starting point is a digitised version of reality and the rendering of an image file, complete with the gaps in information created by the encoding process. In contrast to the megapixel craze, Schwarz renders his files in a coarse grid. Through this extreme scaling, the individual grid point becomes a defined open space.

The intensity of the drawing is dictated by the subject – the image file. The meticulous sequencing of the drawings creates the characteristic, amplitude-modulated grid. As the distance from the portrait increases, the black signatures are perceived as shades of grey and reveal an archived reality.
